Joseph, 72

Man looking at old photos sml.jpg

Joseph was diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease three years ago.  He's 72, and lives with his wife. A male Carer from Elder Family Matters spends two sessions each week with Joseph. They go out walking, to concerts, to the swimming pool, and talk and laugh a lot.  When Joseph and his Carer are out, his wife has the chance to be at home by herself, or go out to meet friends. This arrangement gives them both a break in their regular routine, and re-charges their batteries.

Elder Family Matters administers the financial assistance they receive, towards the cost of these sessions, as they have been approved for Carer Support.

Mary, 87
Lady with present.jpg

Mary's eyesight had been getting worse for a while and her son, who lives in London, was concerned that she was no longer able to manage her own meals, shopping and housework.  He rang Elder Family Matters and a Carer has been going in to Mary’s three times a week now for the past year.

Mary enjoys chatting with the Carer as she prepares her meal, and always appreciates being able to heat the other meal her Carer leaves for the next day. They go out shopping together, and when Mary has an appointment, the Carer accompanies her. They now know each other very well and have a great affection for one another. The Carer has been able to Enliven Mary's life.

Mary’s son receives an email from EFM each fortnight up-dating him on what's been happening in his Mother's life.

Lilah, 76lady knitting.jpg
Lilah enjoys her independence, the comfort of her small apartment, and the fact that she drives herself and gets out with friends.

Her son and daughter live away from Wellington, but they became concerned when they realised in their weekly phone calls that their mother seemed to be forgetting quite important things.

Lilah, reluctantly at first, agreed to having an Elder Family Matters’ Carer, Sally, visit her once a week. Slowly she got to know Sally, and now feels comfortable enough to ask her to do things. They go shopping together; do some cooking together; Sally sweeps up leaves and cleans out the fridge; they search for new knitting patterns together; and Sally takes Lilah on drives up the Coast to see Kapiti Island - her favourite haunt.

A diary has been set up that Lilah refers to and writes in on a daily basis.  She no longer worries she may forget something important, and when her family phone her, she refers to the diary to remind herself of what she's been doing since they last talked, saving her the embarrassment of not being able to recall places and names on the spot.  Her son and daughter feel reassured that someone is looking out for their Mother.

Why choose Elder Family Matters!

Often it is the families (children and spouse) of older people who make contact with us because the older person doesn't feel ready for 'care'.

Children may not be able to 'be there' for their parents as much as they would like. EFM has the experience and the expertise to provide any level of care which bring peace of mind for the whole family and Enliven their parent's life.
